UW Health offers many kinds of dermatologic surgery, including Mohs surgery. Developed by the University of Wisconsin's own Dr. Frederic Mohs in the 1930s, Mohs micrographic is an effective way to treat basal cell and squamous cell carcinomas, two common types of skin cancer.

All board-certified dermatologists are trained to perform surgery of the skin. Some receive advanced fellowship training for specialized procedures.

Some procedures are performed only when they are medically necessary, such as Mohs Surgery. Other procedures may be considered medically necessary or cosmetic. For example, dermabrasion may be performed to repair scar damage, which might be medically necessary or to improve the appearance of aging skin, which would be considered cosmetic.
